Virgin Atlantic's 18th Birthday
- AMIT Consulting LLC teamed up with CMG Communications and Visual Mercenary to produce this promotional website
for Virgin Atlantic. AMIT Consulting's role in this project entailed providing all of the technical development
and consulting on delivery for this site. Components include development of tracking and administration modules,
delivery on demand analytics for all traffic, including total volume and unique visitors for each page and
clickthrough.
- Site Administration area. This area contained dynamic site statistics modules as well as a group "contest judging" tool.
- Post Contest automated rollover after the contest was legally finished.
All site switchovers, including changes in sales tie-ins and the finishing
of the contest, were preprogrammed to automatically switch over at a pre-specified time. All siteovers were fully
pre-tested to ensure a no-fault changeover.
- Originally architected to support an overnight "e-mail" campaign to 300,000 recipients with a Viral Marketing
component potentially doubling (as per past campaigns) the audience, the site needed to support the image resource
requests as well as a tracking component on the emails. The calculated potential bandwidth profile of 1 - 20 Mbps
sustained peak (lasting at least 5 minutes) required not only that we have access to a burstable pipe, but as well
that we use a Squid Cache server to handle all static media requests in front of two webservers with NetBSD / Apache
builds running Python CGI scripts capable of handling up to 21 concurrent user processes without ever slowing down.
The final outcome was, due to non-technical reasons, a reduced delivery (150,000 recipients)
spaced over 5 hours, for smoother usaged patterns. Click though response entailed
12,000 guaranteed unique1 visitors with an additional
6,000 repeat2 users.
